LUKE CHAPTER 15 

I. THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP: VS 1-7 

A. This was the reason for that parable. vs 1-2 (The Jewish leader were criticizing Jesus.)  B. These were the characteristics of that parable. vs 3-7  1. This was the concern for the lost. vs 2-5 a). A lost sheep is valuable. vs 3-4, Matt. 16:26  b). A lost sheep is worth bring home. v 5, James 5:19-20  2. These were the results in finding the lost. vs 6-7 a). Finding the lost bring joy to the soul-winner. v 6, 1 Thess. 2:19-20  b). Finding the lost bring joy to the person who was lost. v 6, Psa. 51:12- 13  c). Finding the lost bring joy the heavenly host. v 7, Heb. 12:22-24 II. THE PARABLE OF THE LOST COIN: VS 8-10  A. These were the concerns for finding that lost coin. v 8  1. There was the lighted candle so that the search for the lost coin could be made. Psa. 119:105, 2 Tim. 3:16-17  2. There was the diligent search for that lost coin. Luke 19:10, Isa. 55:6  B. This was the reward for finding the lost. v 9  1. The lost coin was found.  2. We can find those persons who are lost. James 5:19-20  C. These were the results in finding the lost. vs 9-10  1. Finding the lost will bring joy to the soul-winner. v 9, Prov. 11:30  2. Finding the lost will being joy to those persons who are saved. v 9, Acts 8:39  3. Finding the lost will bring joy to the heavenly host. v 10, Heb. 12:1-2 III. THE PARABLE OF THE LOST LOST SON: VS 11-25  A. This was his request to live in that far country of sin. vs 11-12  1. The prodigal son wanted to leave God so that he could live in that far country of sin. vs 11-12  2. A person may want to leave God so that he can live in that far country of sin. Joshua 24:14-15  B. This was his journey into that far country of sin. v 13  1. The prodigal son left God and journeyed into that far country of sin. v 13  2. All persons have left God and have journeyed into that far country of sin. Romans 3:10, 23, Isa. 59:1-2  C. These were his miseries in that far country of sin. vs 14-16  1. Sin could not really satisfy his hungry and thirst for righteousness. Matt. 5:8, Heb. 11:24-27  2. Sin made him to end up on skid-row. vs 15-16, Romans 6:23  D. This was his decision in that far country of sin. vs 17-19  1. The prodigal son decided to repent of his past sins and return home unto his God.  2. The alien sinner should repent of his past sins and return home unto his God. Acts 17:30-31  E. These were his welcome home from that far country of sin.  1. The prodigal son was reconciled unto God. vs 20-21, 2 Cor. 5:18-21  2. The prodigal son was given a robe of righteousness. v 22, Romans 1:16- 18  3. The prodigal son was given a spiritual feast. vs 23-24, Rev. 22:17 IV. THE CRITICISM OF THE ELDER SON: VS 25-32  A. These were the concerns of the elder son. vs 25-27  1. The elder son was over concerned with himself. vs 25-27  2. Christians can become over concerned with themselves. Romans 12:3  3. Disciples must be equally concerned over other people. James 2:9  B. This was the decision of the elder son. v 28  1. The elder son decided that he would not forgive his young brother. v 28  2. Christians must forgive other people when they repent because God has forgiven them of their sins. Eph. 4:32  C. This was the attitude of the elder son. vs 29-30  1. The elder son had a self righteous attitude. Romans 10:1-3  2. Saints must not have a self righteous attitude. Matt. 5:20, Luke 18:9-14 D. This was his accountability to God. vs 31-32  1. The elder son was rebuked by God. vs 31-32  2. Unfaithful Christians will be rebukes and rejected by our God. Rev. 2:3-4 CHAPTER 16 

I. THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST STEWARD: VS 1-13 

A. This was his accountability unto his master. vs 1-2  1. This man had to give an account of his stewardship.  2. Each person is accountability unto God for his stewardship. Acts 17:30- 31  B. These were his preparations for the future. vs 3-7  1. This man need to make the proper preparation for the future. v 3, Heb. 2:1-4  2. This man was wise because he properly prepared for the future. v 4, 2 Cor. 6:1-2  3. This man did the proper works for the future. vs 5-7, Phil. 2:12-13  C. This was his praise for that preparation for the future. v 8  1. His lord praised him for using such wise judgment in his preparation for the future. v 8  2. Our Lord will praise us in preparing for our heavenly home. vs 9-13, James 1:12, Rev. 2:10 II. THE FRUIT OF THE PHARISEES: VS 14-18  A. These were the characteristics of their works. v 14  1. The Pharisees were covetous people. Col. 3:5  2. The Pharisees were hears only of the word of God. James 1:22-25  3. The Pharisees rejected the Deity of Christ. Matt. 10:32-33  B. These were the traits of their character. vs 15-18  1. The Pharisees were self-righteousness. v 15, Romans 10:1-3  2. The Pharisees misunderstood the law of Moses. vs 16-17, Gal. 3:24-25  3. The Pharisees were deceived concerning marriage. v 18, Matt. 19:3-9 III. THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS: VS 19-31  A. This was his existence upon the earth without God. vs 19-21  1. The rich man trusted in riches more than he trusted in God. v 19, 1 Tim. 6:9-10  2. The rich man enjoyed the pleasures of sin. v 19, 1 John 2:15-17, Romans 6:12-13  B. This was his death upon the earth without God. v 22  1. The rich man failed to hear Moses and the prophets. v 29, Eph. 2:19-22  2. The rich man neglected to repent of his past sins. v 30, Heb. 2:1-4  C. This will be his eternal existence without God. vs 23-31  1. The rich man is being tormented for his sins. vs 23-24, Matt. 10:28  2. The rich man has painful memories of the past. v 25, James 4:17  3. The rich man can not escape from that place of punishment. v 26, 1 Thess. 5:3  4. The rich man wanted his brothers to repent because they could come to that place of punishment. vs 27-28, Luke 13:3 CHAPTER 17 

I. THE VALUE OF FORGIVENESS: VS 1-6 

A. This is the need for forgiveness. vs 1-2 ("Offenses will come.")  B. These are the instructions for forgiveness. v 3  1. Christians must take heed and help one another. Romans 12:1-3  2. Disciples should rebuke their erring brothers in Christ. James 5:19-20  3. Saints need to forgive the brother who repents. Matt. 6:14-15  C. This is the scope for our forgiving others. v 4 (Our forgiveness of other people must be unlimited.)  D. This is the achievement of forgiveness. vs 5-6 (Forgiving other people of their sins would increase our own faith in God.) 1 John 5:4 II. THE SERVANTS OF DUTY: VS 7-10  A. This is the purpose of a servant. vs 7-8 (A servant is to serve his master.) Romans 6:16-18  B. This is the attitude which we must have toward a servant. v 9 (A servant is expected to serve the Lord his God.) Matt. 4:10  C. These are the instructions for a servant. v 10  1. A Christian must do all that God commands him to do. James 2:10  2. A saint can never do more than that which he expected to do. Matt. 5:41, Romans 12:1-2 III. THE HEALING OF THE TEN LEPERS: VS 11-19  A. This was their need for being healed. vs 11-12 (They were lepers.)  B. This was their plea to be healed. v 13 (They cried, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.")  C. This was their blessing in being healed. v 14 (Those ten lepers were cleansed of their leprosy.)  D. These were their attitudes for being healed. vs 15-19  1. One of the lepers was grateful for being healed because he thanked the Lord for his being healed. vs 15-16,19  2. Nine of the lepers were ungrateful for their being healed because they did not thank the Lord for their being healed. vs 17-18 IV. THE KINGDOM OF GOD: VS 20-21  A. This was the certainty of the coming Kingdom of God. v 20 (The question was asked when will the Kingdom of God come?)  B. This was the nature of the coming Kingdom. v 20 (The coming of the Kingdom would not please the sign seekers because the Kingdom of God reign within our hearts.) Rev. 1:5-6  C. This was the purpose of the coming Kingdom of God. v 21 (The Kingdom of God offers spiritual blessings instead of physical blessings.) John 18:36, Acts 2:38, Heb. 12:28-29 V. THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST: VS 22-37  A. These are the assurances of the second coming of Christ. vs 22-24  1. Some people will desire to see the second coming of Christ. v 22  2. Some people will be deceived concerning the second coming of Christ. v 23, 2 Thess. 2:1-3  3. All people will know when the Son of man comes to judge the world in righteousness because we must all appear the judgment seat of Christ. v 24, Acts 17:30-31  B. This is the delay concerning the second coming of Christ. v 25 (The Lord is Longsuffering with mankind.) 2 Peter 3:9  C. These will be the conditions of the world when Christ comes again. vs 26-30  1. The second coming of Christ will be similar to the days of Noah. vs 26-27  2. The second coming of Christ will be like it was in the days of Lot. vs 28- 30  D. These are the instructions which are given for the second coming of Christ. vs 31-33  1. Each person should be spiritual minded instead of being carnal minded. v 31, Romans 8:5-7  2. Each person must never look back at the old world of sin from whence he came. v 32, Heb. 11:14, 1 Peter 4:1-3  3. Each person needs to seek to save hid life. v 33, Acts 2:40  E. These will be the results concerning the second coming of Christ. vs 34-37  1. Some people will be saved.  2. Some people will be lost. CHAPTER 18 

I. THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST JUDGE: VS 1-8 

A. This is the exhortation for us to prayer. v 1 (If Christians are not praying, they are fainting.) 1 Peter 5:7  B. These are the encouragements for us to pray. vs 2-6  1. This is the example of importunity. vs 2-5 (A widow kept asking the judge for help.) Phil. 4:6  2. This is the value of importunity. v 6 (The Lord will answer our prayer in due time.)  C. These are the incentives for us to pray. vs 7-8  1. Our prayer can be answered. Luke 11:9  2. Our prayer can avail much with God. James 5:16  D. This is the motivation for us to pray. v 8 (Disciples should pray to keep from being faithless.) 1 Tim. 2:1-4 II. THE PARABLE OF THE PHARISEE AND PUBLICANS: VS 9-14  A. These are the traits of the self righteous. v 9  1. Those persons who are self righteous trust in themselves. Psa. 118:8  2. Those persons who are self righteous despise other people. James 2:9  B. This is an example of a self righteous person. v 10 (The Pharisee was a self righteous person.) Romans 10:1-3  C. These are the attitudes of those persons who are self righteous. vs 11-12  1. A self righteous person is thankful for himself. v 11, Romans 12:3  2. A self righteous person thinks that he is better than other people. v 11, Acts 10:34-35  3. A self righteous person is proud of his works. v 12, Eph. 2:8  D. These are the ways to overcome self righteousness. vs 13-14  1. Christians can overcome a self righteous attitude by seeking the mercy of God. v 13, Psa. 51:1-3  2. Disciples can overcome a self righteous personality by trusting in the power of God. v 14, Isa. 41:10 III. LESSONS FROM CHILDHOOD: VS 15-17  A. This was the occasion for those lessons. v 15 (The disciples rebuked Jesus for receive a child.)  B. This was the purpose of those lessons. v 16 (The people who are in the Kingdom of God must have child-like traits.)  C. These are the applications of those lessons. v 17  1. Christians must be teachable as little children are teachable. John 6:45 2. Saints should be forgiving as little children are forgiving. Eph. 4:32  3. Disciples need to be trustful as little children are trustful. Prov. 3:5-6 IV. THE RICH YOUNG RULER: VS 18-23  A. These were the desires of the rich young ruler. v 18  1. The rich young ruler wanted instructions. Acts 16:30  2. The rich young ruler desired an inheritance. 1 Peter 1:3-5  B. This was the failure of the rich young ruler. v 19  1. The rich young ruler failed to recognize that Jesus was a God-Person manifested in the flesh. Matt. 1:23  2. No person should make that same mistake. 1 Tim. 3:16, 2 Cor. 5:18  C. These were the traits of the rich young ruler. vs 20-21  1. The rich young ruler had not hurt anyone. Romans 14:7-9  2. The rich young ruler had not helped anyone. Gal. 6:10  D. These were the instructions for the rich young ruler. vs 22-26  1. The rich young ruler was to give unto the poor. James 1:27  2. The rich young ruler was to develop spiritual treasures in heaven. Matt. 6:19-21  3. The rich young ruler was to follow Christ. 2 Peter 2:21  E. This was the decision of the rich young ruler. v 27  1. The rich young ruler decided to remain in rebellion against God. v 27  2. Each person should obey the Lord his God. Romans 6:16-18 V. THE PERIL OF WEALTH: VS 24-27  A. This is the hindrance of wealth. vs 24-25 (Many temptations will come with wealth.) 1 Tim. 6:9-10  B. This is the desire for wealth. v 26 (We may desire to be wealthy.)  C. This is the cure for wealth. v 27 (Christians should trust in the power of God more than we trust in the power of money.) 1 Tim. 6:17-19 VI. THE VALUE OF FOLLOWING CHRIST: VS 28-30  A. This are the sacrifices in following Christ. v 28 (Some people have left their home, family and business to follow Christ.)  B. These are the blessings for following Christ. vs 29-30  1. Christians will receive the abundance of physical blessings. vs 29-30, Phi. 4:19  2. Disciples will receive the abundance of spiritual blessings. v 30, Eph. 1:3 VII. JESUS REVEALED HIS CRUCIFIXION: VS 31-34  A. This was the purpose of His crucifixion. v 31 (The crucifixion of Christ fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.) Isa. 53:1-12, Luke 24:44-48  B. This was the manner of His crucifixion. vs 32-33 (Jesus would be shamefully treated.) Heb. 12:1-3  C. This was the reality of His crucifixion. v 33 (Jesus would be raise from the grave on the third day.) 1 Cor. 15:1-4  D. This would be the glory of His crucifixion. v 33 (Jesus would be raised for our justification.) Romans 4:25  E. These are the results of His crucifixion. v 34  1. We as alien sinners can fail to understand the purpose of His crucifixion. 1 Cor. 1:23  2. We as Christians can understand the purpose of His crucifixion. 1 Cor. 2:2, Gal. 6:14 VIII. JESUS HEALED A BLIND MAN: VS 35-43  A. This was his condition in life. v 35  1. He was a blind bagger in life.  2. We can be blind in a spiritual way. Matt. 5:6  B. This was his great opportunity in life. vs 36-37  1. Jesus of Nazareth was coming where he was.  2. Jesus is still knocking at the door of our hearts. Rev. 3:20  C. This was his plea in life. v 38  1. He cried for "Mercy".  2. We need to plea for the mercy of God. Heb. 8:12  D. This was his rebuke in life. v 39  1. The people told him to hold his peace.  2. Christians are rebuked in many different ways. 2 Tim. 3:12  E. These were his blessings. vs 40-42  1. The blind man had an audience with Jesus. v 40, Matt. 28:20  2. The blind man was asked by Jesus, "What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?" v 41, Matt. 7:7  3. The blind man asked that he might receive his light. v 42 , John 15:7  F. These were his gratitudes. v 43  1. The blind man followed Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17  2. The blind man glorified God. Matt. 5:16 CHAPTER 19 

I. THE EXAMPLE OF ZACCHAEUS: VS 1-10 

A. The was his need for the Lord. vs 1-2 (Zacchaeus was a chief sinner among the Publicans.)  B. This was his desire to see the Lord. vs 3-4 (Zacchaeus climbed up into a sycamore tree so that he could see the Lord.)  C. This was his call from the Lord. vs 5-6  1. The Lord called to him. v 5  2. Zacchaeus obeyed the call of Jesus. v 6  D. This was his conversion with the Lord. vs 7-8  1. Zacchaeus overcame criticism. v 7  2. Zacchaeus changed his character. v 8  E. This was his blessings. vs 9-10 (Zacchaeus was saved from his past sins.) II. THE PARABLES OF THE POUNDS: VS 11-27  A. This is nature of the Kingdom. vs 11-12 (Christ is the head of His Kingdom.) John 18:36, Eph. 1:16-21  B. These are the characteristics of the Kingdom. vs 13-14  1. This Kingdom can be accepted. v 13, Heb. 12:28-29  2. This Kingdom can be rejected. v 14, Romans 6:16-18  C. These are the judgments of the Kingdom. vs 15-25  1. Humanity will be judged according to its ability. vs 16-19 a). This was true of the ten pounds. vs 16-17  b). This was true of the five pounds. vs 18-19  2. Humanity will be judged according to its opportunities. vs 20-25 a). This was true of the one pound. vs 20-21  b). The Lord did not accept the accuses for his failures. vs 22-25  D. This is the law for the Kingdom. vs 26-27  1. Christians must grow in spirituality because they would be punished for their lack of growth. v 26, 2 Peter 3:18  2. Each person should be a member of the Kingdom because that person would be punished for his rebellion against it. v 27, 1 Cor. 15:24-28 III. THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY OF JESUS INTO JERUSALEM: VS 28-40  A. These were the preparations for His entry into Jerusalem. vs 28-34  1. Jesus was journeying toward Jerusalem. vs 28-29  2. Jesus borrowed a colt so that He could ride into Jerusalem. vs 29-34  B. This was the humility of His entry into Jerusalem. vs 35-36 (Jesus was riding a donkey which was the lowest of all animals.)  C. These were the praises for His entry. vs 37-38  1. Jesus was praised for His mighty works. v 37  2. Jesus was praised for coming in the name of the Lord. v 38  D. This was the criticism for His entry into Jerusalem. vs 39-40 (The crowd was so noisy that Jesus was told to rebuke His disciples.) IV. JESUS WEPT OVER JERUSALEM: VS 41-44  A. This was His compassion for Jerusalem. v 41 (The people of Jerusalem was sinful and rebellious people.)  B. This was His desire for Jerusalem. v 42 (Jesus wanted the people of Jerusalem to know the truth.)  C. This was His prediction for Jerusalem. vs 43-44 (Jesus revealed that Jerusalem would be destroyed.) V. JESUS CLEANSED THE TEMPLE: VS 45-48  A. This was the act of Jesus cleaning the temple. v 45 (Jesus drove out the thieves.)  B. This was the reason for Jesus cleansing the temple. v 46 (The people had made it a cave of robbers.)  C. This was the blessing for Jesus cleansing the temple. v 47 (Jesus daily taught in the temple.)  D. These were the results of Jesus cleansing the temple. vs 47-48  1. The cleansing of the temple cause His enemies to plot His death. v 47  2. The cleansing of the temple also increased His popularity. v 48 CHAPTER 20 

I. THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST IS CHALLENGED: VS 1-8 

A. These were the ways by which Christ demonstrated His authority. v 1  1. Jesus taught in the temple because He had previously cleansed the temple.  2. Jesus preached the gospel to the people.  B. These were the challenges to His authority. v 2  1. What is your authority to cleanse the temple?  2. Who gave you this authority to cleanse the temple?  C. This was the defense of His authority. vs 3-8  1. Jesus confounded His enemies because they refused to answer His questions concerning the baptism of John. vs 3-7  2. Jesus refused to tell them the source of His authority. v 8 II. THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED HUSBANDMEN: VS 9-18  A. This was their opportunity in life to produce the fruit of righteousness. v 9  1. The Jewish people had a vineyard which signified the Jewish Nation so that they could produce the fruits of righteousness. v 9, Gal. 3:19-29  2. Christians have the church (the Eternal Kingdom of God) so that they can produce the fruits of righteousness. Matt. 16:13-18, Heb. 12:28-29, Gal. 5:22-23  B. This was the expectation from that vineyard. v 10  1. The Lord expected the Israelites to produce righteous fruit. Matt. 3:7-12, Mat. 23:33-36  2. The Lord expects Christians to produce righteous fruit. John 15:1-8  C. This was the disappointment from that vineyard. vs 10-15  1. The Jewish people had persecuted the prophets and had rejected the Son. Matt. 23:37, Matt. 27:22-23  2. Christians can go away into apostasy and not produce the fruit of righteousness. 2 Tim. 4:1-4, Heb. 5:8-9  D. This was the accountability of that vineyard. vs 16-18  1. The Israelites will be judged and punished because the law of Moses ended at the cross. Matt. 27:51, Col. 2:14, Romans 1:16  2. The Lord will hold each person accountability for the deeds which he has done in this life. 2 Cor. 5:10 III. THE CONSPIRACY AGAINST CHRIST: VS 19-26  A. This was the reason for that conspiracy. v 19 (The chief Priests and scribes hated Christ and His teachings.)  B. These were the plans for that conspiracy. v 20  1. The chief Priests and scribes watched for an opportunity to ensnare Jesus.  2. The chief Priests and scribes sent spies to trap Jesus.  C. These were the ways of that conspiracy. vs 21-22  1. The spies uses a flattering approach upon Jesus. v 21  2. The spies asked Jesus loaded questions. v 22  D. This was the weakness of that conspiracy. v 23 (Those persons who are created can not outwit their Creator.)  E. These were the results of that conspiracy. vs 24-26  1. That conspiracy ended with a true statement. vs 24-25  2. That conspiracy ended in an amazement because they held their peace. v 26 IV. THE QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE RESURRECTION: VS 27-38  A. This was the denial of the resurrection. v 27  1. The Sadducees denied the resurrection of the dead.  2. No person should not deny the resurrection of the dead. 1 Cor. 14:12-19  B. This is why the Sadducees denied the resurrection of the dead. vs 28-33  1. The Sadducees did not know the scriptures, nor the power of God. vs 28- 33, Matt. 22:29  2. Christians must know the scriptures and the power of God. 2 Tim. 3:16- 17, Phil. 3:8-11  C. These are the blessings of the resurrection. vs 34-36  1. The resurrected life will consist of a Spiritual Life. vs 34-35 a). Fleshly desires will be over. 1 Cor. 15:42-44  b). Fleshly ties will end. 1 Cor. 15:50-55  2. The resurrected life will consist of immortality for the faithful people of God. v 36, Romans 2:7, 1 Tim. 6:15-16  D. These are the assurances of the resurrection. vs 37-38  1. When Christ comes, all those persons who have died will be raised from the grave. John 5:28-29  2. When Christ comes, all those persons who are living upon the earth will be translated. 1 Cor. 15:50-55 V. JESUS AND THE SCRIBES: VS 39-47  A. Jesus silenced the Scribes. vs 39-40  1. The Scribes were well pleased with His answer. v 39  2. The Scribes were afraid to ask Jesus any more questions. v 40  B. Jesus asked the Scribes a question. vs 41-44  1. Jesus asked, "How say they that Christ is David's son? v 41  2. David called Christ his son. vs 42-43, Psa. 110:1 a). David called Christ his son according to the flesh because Christ had a physical body from David and Abraham. Matt. 1:1, Romans 1:1-4  b). David did not called Christ his son according to his spiritual nature because the Soul and Spirit of Jesus was Uncreated: Eternal. John 1:1-3, Phil. 2:5-11  C. Jesus rebuked the Scribes because of their evil works. vs 45-47 (Jesus said, "Beware of the Scribes" because they refused to do the works of God.")
